Developing Early Operation Concepts

In this section of the blog, I am going to keep track of some ideas generated by myself and other student teachers about how to introduce basic operations on numbers. These operations include addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division and the relations between these different operations. I will search for real-life and practical applications for each of the operations, as well as ideas about how to teach different strategies for picking and using operations. Finally, I will try to find information about common misconceptions and errors that children make in performing these operations and try to identify natural opportunities that might exist in the classroom or home for students to achieve a basic understanding of how operations can be represented (occur naturally).
